Super 8

This summer's movie lineup is packed with superhero movies (Thor, X-Men: First Class, Green Lantern), big-budget comedies (The Bridesmaids, Hangover 2), and major sequels (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Transformers Dark of the Moon).

There's very little room in the schedule for original titles, which require studios to take a bit of a gamble.  Other than "Cowboys and Aliens" and "Tree of Life," I'm really looking forward to JJ Abrams "Super 8."  Produced by Steven Spielberg, the movie doesn't feature any superstar actors to overshadow the plot.  I have a feeling "Super 8" will be more like Abrams's "Star Trek," and less like "Cloverfield."  In other words, good versus bad.

If the movie lives up to the expectations that the preview has set, I'd predict that "Super 8" will be the blockbuster Oscar nominee next year.

Today the studio released the first preview of the movie, other than their short teaser, which aired during the Super Bowl.
